With today’s release of Ubuntu 16.04 LTS , Snappy package management is being more broadly supported across the Ubuntu ecosystem. This complementary packaging format to Debian packages for Ubuntu will allow third-party applications to be more easily updated. One of the other organizations already on board with using the Snap packaging format is Mozilla.
Mozilla has announced today they will begin packaging Firefox in the snap format for Ubuntu "later this year."
Nick Nguyen at Mozilla wrote on their blog this morning, "Previously, a static version of Firefox would ship with each new Operating System version for the lifecycle of that OS. With the snap format, new features can be released to users of older OS versions too. Later this year, we will offer Firefox in snap format making it easier to push the browser directly to users rather than relying on an intermediary to accept updates before they reach users."
