The irony is that I debugged this while waiting on hold. To cancel my order. Dark UI patterns on the verizonfios website /cc @ verizonfios

@ tundal45 Heh, nah I will. Applying the word "lying" to a organization is difficult though, IMO implies too much intent.

@ tundal45 Perhaps labels like "failed" "manipulative" "corrupt" fit better. I will give it an ear though!

@ mixonic @ charisrooda They do fetch the actual count on DOM ready. So maybe forgotten code, or they don’t want to poll and do random trend.

@ mixonic @ charisrooda I’m guessing the second one, because if it was truly random why query the server at all.

@ rikschennink @ charisrooda Doesn’t look like trend, looks like random walking. If http:// fios.verizon.com/agent_queue.php   is a queue, why go random at all?!

@ rikschennink @ charisrooda The first request includes a timestamp, for cache busting? Lazy, regardless, if the trend doesn’t poll at all.

@ mixonic @ charisrooda yes, my guess would be that’s for cache busting.

@ Omaized Between 1 and 15. The update time is also random, and the agent count trends higher if the timeout was longer.

@ yaelwrites don’t think so. Seems likely there is an attempt at accurate data, tho the implementation fails cmpletly https:// twitter.com/rikschennink/s tatus/736618354098737152?s=09

[C] The average user stays on the page for x seconds. During that time, fixed starting point + random = close enough.

@ mixonic @ SwiftOnSecurity @ verizonfios most likely, devs have no way to get that info, so it’s an F U to Verizon. But, Culture of Cheating

@ AJFarkas @ SwiftOnSecurity @ verizonfios The first request checks an API in that screenshot http:// fios.verizon.com/agent_queue.php   so there is *some* data.

@ mixonic is that reading correct? Seems like t() is called by e() when it gets a count back from the server, and then if the number (cont)

@ mixonic … of waiting agents is too high, they’re artificially reducing it? At least, from what I could read in that pic — can’t find src

@ SpikesDivZero Use Chrome’s pretty print. https:// developer.chrome.com/devtools/docs/ javascript-debugging#pretty-print   The first number is adjusted down, yeah. Then random walk.
