How to Add a Splash of Color to Ubuntu’s Default Look

Ambiance Flat Blue Spring

Like the default Ubuntu themes but think they could do with a splash of color?

Say hello to ‘ Ambiance & Radiance Flat Colors ‘ by Ravefinity. This GTK theme pack adds personality to the familiar look of Ubuntu’s default desktop themes through the canny use of color.

A Flat Theme With A Difference

As you’ll have gathered from the name, the theme is flat, eschewing the traditional gradient step of the stock Ubuntu Light themes for a solid chunk of color.

The theme is available in a choice of 13 colors :

  • Blue
  • Spring Blue
  • Brown
  • Graphite
  • Green
  • Orange
  • Purple
  • Pink
  • Red
  • Teal
  • Yellow

Each color is also available in two variants: original or pro. Original uses coloured window buttons while the Pro option uses desaturated ‘mono’ window controls instead.

But the theme doesn’t stop there.

Each choice and each window button variant is also available ‘fusion original ‘ and ‘fusion pro’ variants.

The makers of the theme surmise them as so:

  • Ambiance is the darker flavor. Dark panel, menu etc.
  • Ambiance Fusion is a hybrid blend w/Light toolbars. Dark panel, menu etc.
  • Radiance is the lighter flavor. Light panel, menu etc.

For a grand total of 52 variants on Ambiance flat and 52 variants on Radiance flat — 104 themes in total. Not bad for the price of absolutely free!

The PPA provides Ubuntu packages to Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, 15.10 and Ubuntu 16.04 LTS.

Differences in the GTK versions shipping in these releases may mean there are slight visual differences.
